Scholar-Citizen Courses-CORE 201: Topics in Critical Inquiry
-CORE 202: Topics in Critical Inquiry -SOCY 482: Qualitative Research Methods -SOCY 493: Practicum in Sociology -LEAD 110: Emerging Leadership The Scholar-Citizen Initiative focuses on providing students with amazing opportunities where they can gain new knowledge and experiences through their courses. Their motto is "Create. Connect. Contribute." Through my scholar-citizen class, I have learned so much, and then I was able to apply what I had learned in the community. My SCI experience was with the Floyd County Place-Based Education Project, which is not known as "Roots With Wings."

In my Core 201 class, I learned how to properly analyze qualitative data. The course was on ethnography, anthropology, and culture. We learned how to properly do interviews, transcribe those interviews, look for key words, and use I-movie. In Core 202, we applied what we learned by going to Floyd County High School and teaching the high school students everything that we had learned in our Core 201 class. We did presentations and held focus groups. The major project in the course involved us interviewing WWII veterans from Floyd County. We transcribed those interviews, analyzed the information, and then made movies for each interviewee and their family. It was an amazing experience where I was able to learn and teach at the same time. I loved this class so much that I went on to take the sociology version of the class.
The sociology version of the class definitely included more work because it was a 400-level research methods class. In the fall semester, we actually went out to Floyd County and did our own interviews, transcriptions, content logs, etc. with Floyd County farmers. We learned so much about the culture of Floyd County and what goes into farming. Then, we taught the high school students again in the spring semester. I am so thankful that I got involved with the SCI program because I really love how they stand for hands-on learning and gaining experience. I wish all of my courses could have a "learning outside of a lecture" component.
