I did my internship at the Women's Resource Center located in Radford, VA. Over 50 hours of training were required to be a volunteer at this non-profit agency. I did my training hours as a volunteer. Then, I did an internship of 120 hours. The Women's Resource Center is a shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. There is a 24-hour hotline, an after school program, and counseling services that are also offered. I gained hotline experience, I worked with the children at the after school program, and I had one-on-one interactions with shelter residents.

Paragraph from my final reflection of my internship (December 3, 2013):
"My internship at the Women’s Resource Center has been an amazing experience. I have learned so many valuable lessons that are going to help me in the rest of my psychology career. I have learned that you cannot blame yourself for the people that you cannot help. I learned to stay professional in every situation no matter how well you know the caller. I was able to enhance my multitasking skills when I had to answer calls while doing an intake and meeting the residents’ needs all at the same time. I practiced my empathy and problem-solving skills, and I became familiar with a lot of community resources that we have in the New River Valley. I learned that, most of the time, the thing that people want the most is someone who will listen to them. I am definitely going to continue to volunteer at the Women’s Resource Center even after my internship is over. I hope to enhance my crisis intervention skills even further and continue to have valuable experiences by helping callers and shelter residents."
