The "LEAD" in the LEAD Scholar Program stands for Leader, Experience, Academics, and Development. The requirements include presenting at least two presentations, attending at least one conference, participating in three service projects (one for Radford University, one for the local community, and one that is national/global), and doing an internship. Students are also required to take the LEAD 110: Emerging Leadership course and 12 additional credits in the LEAD scholar curriculum. The "development" part of this program includes holding a leadership position and utilizing everything that you have learned.
In the LEAD 110 course, students have to do a service project as part of their grade. This project is where student learn how to delegate authority and work together to accomplish a goal. Our service project was winterizing a garden at the Selu Conservancy that Radford University owns. Our duties involved digging up roots, pulling weeds, raking a hole around the perimeter so that chicken wire could be put in, and placing the chicken wire. We also assisted in any other duties that needed to be done at Selu while we were there. I absolutely loved this service project and thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Selu. I feel that Selu offers so many valuable opportunities for Radford University students, and so many students are unaware of this amazing resource. |
